Walk into almost any Gracie Barra Kirkland class and you'll notice something before you ever see a technique: people are smiling. That's not an accident.

Brazilian jiu-jitsu has a reputation as a brutal combat sport, and it can be — but at its core, it's a game of leverage and problem-solving that rewards curiosity over raw athleticism. That's what makes it addictive, and why our mats stay full.

Jiu-jitsu builds real, practical self-defense skills that work regardless of size or strength, which is part of why it anchors modern mixed martial arts. The physical upside goes further, too. Members consistently call it the best workout they've ever stuck with, because it doesn't feel like exercise — it feels like solving a puzzle with your whole body against a partner who's solving it right back.

What sets us apart isn't just technique, though our curriculum traces directly to the Gracie family's original teachings — it's the culture and the coaching. Our professors bring a wealth of competition experience to every class, so what you're learning has been tested against real, resisting opponents at the highest levels, not just drilled in theory.

We're also the only school in the area that offers just as many NoGi classes as Gi classes, so you can build a well-rounded game instead of specializing by default. On top of our regular class schedule, we run frequent open mats where students can roll freely and drill whatever they're working on, which is invaluable time for closing the gaps a formal lesson plan can't always reach.

New students train right alongside experienced ones, and the whole room is invested in helping each other improve.

We're also proud to be the only school in Washington that offers a dedicated women's program at this scale: three women's-only classes a week, led by one of our female black belts, who also runs a nonprofit dedicated to getting more women onto the mats. Those classes are $10 each for women training on their own, and completely free for any woman whose household includes a full-time member — a rare, deliberate resource for anyone who wants to start her jiu-jitsu journey in a space built specifically for her.

Jiu-jitsu here is also built for the whole family. One flat household rate — $500, no matter how many people live under your roof — covers everyone from parents to kids.

Speaking of kids, our youngest members get a dedicated competition class every week, so a motivated young grappler can be on the mats up to four days a week. And throughout the year, we bring the community together off the mats too, with regular events for members and their families.

Whether you want self-defense, fitness, competition, or a community that holds you accountable to show up, there's a place for you on our mats. We welcome all ages, body types, and experience levels, including zero.
